Chaplain airs worries over bikie laws

A Townsville chaplain has questioned the Queensland Government\’s bikie laws that see inmates segregated.
Phil Heang says an inmate at the Townsville Correctional Centre has been placed in solitary confinement, despite being in prison before the laws came into effect.
The Department of Justice says members of criminal motorcycle gangs are separated from the general prison population to disrupt attempts to continue criminal activities inside prisons.
Mr Heang says the laws are unfair.
\”He\’s a trusted prisoner, he\’s been working towards his rehabilitation, he was actually working in the prison workshop which only trusted men are allowed to do, he was taken and handcuffed on the 29th of October and put in solitary confinement,\” he said.
\”I said, \’what\’s happened, what have you done?\’ He said, \’I haven\’t done anything, I\’ve been put in solitary confinement, it\’s not because I\’ve misbehaved, it\’s because of these new bikie laws\’, they\’ve been applied to prisoners who are already in prison who\’ve been convicted and sentenced, the laws have been applied retrospectively.\”
